I recently picked up a copy of Library of Health: Complete Guide to Prevention and Cure of Disease. Published by the America Health Society in 1916, it was 20 books compiled into a single volume nearly 1800 pages long. B. Frank Scholl, Ph.G., M.D. edited the reference book with the assistance of two other medical doctors and a slew of medical specialists.
I opened the reference book to a random section and began reading. Here are excerpts:
Object of Food. - The object of food is primarily to furnishing the means for growth, repair, heat and energy. The mere gratification of appetite, which to the detriment of health too often is regarded with undue prominence, is a secondary consideration and merely incident to nature’s demand for nutrition.
Food, Half of Life’s Battle. – It has been said that ‘food properly chosen, properly cooked and properly eaten is half of the battle of life,’ and the practical value of the subject will readily be understood when it is considered that it plays an important part, not only in maintaining health, but in modifying and curing diseases.
I suspect that aside from the Cheesecake Factory most people would agree with the previous two paragraphs. However, two paragraphs later caught my attention.
How Food Affects Races. – It has been pointed out, and doubtless with some truth, that racial distinctions are in a measure the result of the character of the food taken, and that the Irish and Hindu would not have submitted so supinely to the rule of England had their diet, which consists chiefly of vegetables, been more highly nutritious like that of the British.
